Federal Pharmacy Partnership for Long-Term Care Program


For those communities that chose CVS or Walgreens for the Federal Pharmacy Partnership for COVID-19 Vaccine Program, CVS and Walgreens have started communicating with communities about the program. The information from both pharmacies is attached. It is imperative that you follow the guidance and direction from CVS or Walgreens when your community receives this information. This will be key to your vaccination clinics running smoothly.

If you have not been contacted, communication will likely continue over the next week. If your facility DID indicate CVS or Walgreens but have not heard from them yet, they you should go to the CVS or Walgreens website and fill out the contact information for your facility. CVS and Walgreens are still working through contacting all the communities assigned to them.

Please make sure the point of contact listed when you registered for the vaccine program is aware the call and/or email from the pharmacies will be coming. Also, please continue to check your junk or spam folders if you have not been contacted by a pharmacy.

Program Enrollment Information

Early in the COVID-19 Vaccination Program, there may be a limited supply of COVID-19 vaccine and vaccination efforts may focus on those critical to the response, those providing direct care, and those at highest risk for developing severe illness from COVID-19. This includes long-term care facility (LTCF) residents (i.e., nursing home, assisted living facility, and independent living facility residents).

As part of a nationwide vaccination strategy, all long-term care settings have an option to enroll in the Pharmacy Partnership for Long-term Care Program. Through this program, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has engaged retail pharmacy partners (CVS and Walgreens) to secure vaccine and provide on-site vaccination of residents, at no cost to the facility. This program provides end-to-end management of the COVID-19 vaccination process, including storage, handling, cold chain management, on-site vaccinations, and fulfillment of reporting requirements, to facilitate safe and effective vaccination of this patient population, while reducing burden on facilities and jurisdictional health departments.

Beginning October 19, LTCFs are being asked to enroll in the program or opt out and indicate an alternate plan for vaccinating residents. Nursing homes and skilled nursing facilities will be able to sign up via the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) and all other facilities via an online sign up form. Sign-up will remain open for two weeks.

Jurisdictions, pharmacies, and CDC will work closely together to coordinate, track, and monitor distribution to streamline and optimize efforts. CDC recognizes the importance of accurate data on vaccine distribution and dispensing to help jurisdictions make informed planning decisions. CDC will work closely with jurisdictions to identify any gaps that may not be filled by the Pharmacy Partnership for Long-term Care Program and additional strategies that may help address those gaps.
