Alzheimer’s Disease Plan Working Group

Executive Order 18-14 established the Kansas Alzheimer’s Disease Working Group in June 2018. The working group will be comprised of legislators, stakeholders, citizens, and representatives of organizations intimately familiar with the disease.

“There are over 53,000 Kansans living with Alzheimer’s with more than 151,000 caregivers in the state who are caring for loved ones with the disease,” said Governor Colyer. “Kansas is the only state in the nation that is not currently drafting or implementing a comprehensive Alzheimer’s Disease Plan. It is my hope that this working group will provide research, guidance, and recommendations so we can begin developing one of these plans immediately.”

The working group will have goals that include but are not limited to:

  • Assessing the current and future impact of Alzheimer’s disease on residents of the State of Kansas;
  • Examining the existing industries, services and resources addressing the needs of persons with Alzheimer’s, their families, and caregivers; and
  • Developing a strategy to mobilize a state response to this public health crisis.

Kansas Alzheimer's Disease Plan

The working group met at least bi-monthly between the months of August and November of 2018 and was chaired by Ann Elifrits, Commissioner, Commission on Aging, Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services (KDADS). Working group members were appointed by either the Governor or other elected officials.

The recommendations offered in this plan are within reach but are only the first steps to addressing this public health crisis. Systematic change requires time so urgent action is needed now.

The complete plan, along with an executive summary are posted below.
